History of the Portland Trail Blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers basketball franchise is based in Portland, Oregon and was founded in 1970. The team currently competes as a member of the Western Conference Northwest Division in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and hosts home games at the   Moda Center in Portland.

The team got its name from a contest that receives over 10,000 entries from Portland residents. The name “Pioneers” actually received the most votes but due to it being the name of Portland’s Lewis & Clark College, it was excluded from contention. The name “Trail Blazers” received 172 entries and was selected by the judging panel as the name for the newly established team.

The name is a reference to the Oregon Trail and the act of “trailblazing” where explorers made new paths in forests so wagons of settlers could follow a safe route when moving to the newly discovered western America during the early 1800s.
